Claiming the support of around 80 per cent Muslim women and 40 per cent Muslim men for the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav announced on Sunday that the state cabinet has approved the draft Bill.
Dr. Yadav said the Bill would now be tabled in the Madhya Pradesh State Assembly during its monsoon session to be held from 20 to 24 July.

The draft Bill to implement the UCC was approved in a special cabinet meeting held in Jagdishpur (formerly Islamnagar), on the outskirts of the capital Bhopal.

Addressing reporters after the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister described the Bill as an important step towards women’s empowerment and noted that the tribal community has been excluded from its scope. He called on all political parties to rise above partisan politics and support this bill, which aims to strengthen social harmony, women’s empowerment, and national unity.
Dr Yadav said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Left parties presented their views before the committee but the Congress, which views every issue from a Hindu-Muslim and vote bank perspective, abstained.
He said that the Bill provides equal legal status for all children born through marriage, live-in relationships, adoption, surrogacy, and through the test tube baby technique.
The committee, headed by Justice (Retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai, recently submitted its report to the Chief Minister, recommending that Scheduled Tribes (Adivasis) be excluded from the scope of the UCC.
